Basic information

It is located in the southwestern part of the Island of Great Britain and on the Isle of Anglesey. It borders in the East with England.. The Capital city of Wales is Cardiff. It's the biggest city in the country. Welsh flag is composed of white and green lines in the background with a scary red dragon. Welsh national symbol is leek. Official language are Welsh and English. Name 'Wales' comes from Germanic word 'Walha',which means 'foreigner' or 'foreign'. Welsh people call themselves 'Cymru', which probably means 'compatriot' in old Welsh language.

Geography.

Wales is located on a peninsula in the Midwest of the United Kingdom. It has an area of approximately 20 779 square km. .It measures 274 km from North to South and 97 km from West to East . Wales is bordered by England in the East and with the sea on the other three sides: with the Bristol Strait in the South, St. George Strait in the West, and the Irish Seain the North. The Welsh coastline has a length of 965 km. Off the coast of Wales, is located a few islands, the largest is Anglesey in the North West. Waters

Wales is surrounded by sea on three sides and Pembrokeshire coast has up to 300 km Porthcawl, favourite surfing spot, is located in South Wales. There is also Merthyr Mawr Warren near, place with one of the biggest sand dunes in Europe. Wales can be proud of 398 natural lakes and another 90 lakes built by people. Lake Llyn Tegid in Gwynedd is used for canoeing, windsurfing and kayaking.

Geology

Wales is mostly mountainous, especially in the North and in the middle. Mountains were shaped during last ice age. Highest mountains in Wales are located in Snowdonia. The highest mountain in Wales is Snowdon (1 085 m). Cambrian mountains are situated in the middle of Wales and are followed by Brecon Beacons in the South.

Tourism

The highest mountain is Snowdon located in North Wales where is also national park - Snowdonia / near city Conwy /. Black mountains are in the eastern part.
